Pirates throttle Trojans behind Torrey’s 21 points

A second-quarter outburst led the Adna Pirates to a 64-33 victory over the Pe Ell Trojans Thursday in Pe Ell.

Both teams came out of the gate cold offensively, with Adna holding just a 10-7 advantage through the first quarter. Adna junior McKenna Torrey, who was recently named a WIAA Athlete of the Week, caught fire in the second quarter with 11 points en route to a 28-7 second period for the Pirates, who led 38-14 at the half.

Torrey finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with seven assists and six steals. Rhylee Beebe added 17 points, and Kamryn Freeman provided a boost off the bench with a dozen off of 4 of 7 shooting from behind the arc.

“We did a good job of getting paint touches and kicking to open people in the second quarter,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “When that happened, we hit shots. Kamryn Freeman came off the bench and had a great shooting performance. She has embraced that sixth-man role and done really well at it for a freshman.”

Pe Ell’s offensive woes continued, in large part due to the Pirates’ defensive pressure. The Trojans shot 25% from the field, including 16% from 3-point range.

“We started the game with great energy and intensity, which was good to see,” Pe Ell coach Kelsey Lennox said. “The second quarter, however, was a killer as we did not rebound well and allowed way too many second-chance opportunities, which is how they scored the majority of their points.”

Karli Phelps scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Peyton Zock tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Maisy King was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Adna (5-1) will head to Cascade Christian Saturday night, while Pe Ell (2-4) travels to Neah Bay on Monday, Dec. 29.
