Pirates Sweep Doubleheader With Chinooks

After a rainout Friday forced a doubleheader against Kalama on Saturday, the Adna baseball team took that change in stride, defeating the Chinooks in back-to-back games, 15-8 and 7-4 at home.

“They're well-coached and we came out and took care of what we needed to do,” Pirates coach Thad Nelson said. “It was nice to see us respond after giving up the eight runs in that first game, all-in-all it was a really strong day for us.”

The Pirates got off to a hot start in the first game, scoring eight unanswered runs before a disastrous fifth inning saw the Chinooks pull even heading into the sixth.

Adna corrected that inning quickly, however, scoring a run to take the lead in the sixth and putting six on the board in the seventh to pull away and win, 15-8.

Tristan Percival got the start on the mound and went four innings, allowing no runs and giving up just one hit with eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Nate Scheuber went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs, Danner Hoinowski went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Avery Manning went 2 for 3 with three runs scored.

In Game 2, the Pirates gave up a 2-spot to start the game before scoring three in the second. After Kalama tied it up again with a 2-run fifth inning, the Pirates again retook the lead quickly, scoring three runs in the fifth to hold on to a lead they would never relinquish.

Asher Guerrero threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Percival went 3 for 4 at the plate and Hoinowski added a run scored on a 2 for 4 performance.

The Pirates will take on another league foe on Wednesday at home in Rainier, weather-permitting.
