Pirates down Wildcats in overtime

Thirty-two minutes wasn’t quite enough for the Adna boys basketball team Tuesday at home, but the Pirates were happy to pull the extra shift to beat 1A La Center 73-68 in overtime in a non-league contest.

“We competed like crazy tonight,” Adna coach Luke Salme said.

The Pirates (5-1, 2-1 C2BL) led by three points going into the fourth quarter but gave the lead up, and needed a Jens Neilson layup off a long inbounds pass with 2.4 seconds left to tie the game up at 65-65.

Trevin Salme stole the ensuing inbounds pass and nearly hit a miracle with one hand while falling out of bounds, but his effort drew two types of iron as well as the backboard before bouncing out to cue up the extra period.

In overtime, though, it was all Adna, which finished on an 8-3 run thanks to buckets from Trevin Salme and Lane Johnson and free throws from Neilson and Grayson Humphrey.

Neilson led the way with 28 points.

“Jens had an incredible night. I told the boys I don't know that I've seen a human being compete that hard for 32 minutes,” Luke Salme said after the game, briefly forgetting that his Pirates had in fact played 37 minutes.

Lane Johnson added 16 points, and Trevin Salme had 13.

Adna will hit the road south Thursday, taking on Winlock in Egg Town.
