A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man during a pursuit in Parkland on Sunday morning.
Deputies were pursuing the man in connection with a stabbing that happened two hours earlier, sheriff’s spokesperson Carly Cappetto said in an email.
The shooting is being investigated by the Pierce County Force Investigation Team. Sgt. Charles Porche, a spokesperson for the investigation, said the man was armed with a knife and confirmed a deputy fired their weapon. He said several deputies were involved in the shooting, but it’s unknown how many of them fired weapons.
A 54-year-old man was stabbed near Quickstop Grocery in Parkland around 6:24 a.m. He told police an unknown man asked him what his religion was and attacked him and his dog after he said he was a Christian, Capetto said. The 54-year-old man provided deputies with a description of the person who stabbed him.
Two hours later, a deputy spotted the man around 8:40 a.m. at the 800 block of 112th Street South. The man fled, and deputies followed. Shots were fired seven minutes later.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Porche said the knife the man had was similar to a knife used in the stabbing.
