A person is missing after a car crashed Saturday along Northeast Marine Drive and landed in the Columbia River, police say.

The crash — which happened around 8 a.m. near Northeast 122nd Avenue — careened the car into a shallow part of the river, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

When officers arrived at the scene they found a broken guardrail and the car empty and on its side, police said.

Portland Fire & Rescue, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the waters around the crash but didn’t find the driver, police said.

Police said the Major Crash Team is investigating the incident due to “the possibility that the driver is deceased,” and police ask anyone with information to email crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 25-207638.
