On Friday at 5:30 p.m. ice cream will be served at Recreation Park, 221 SW 13th St. Chehalis, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Penny Playground and the Chehalis Sports Complex.
The playground was recently remodeled to be safer, more modern and more accessible for park-goers with disabilities.
“Penny Playground has long been a central hub and a place of great joy for Chehalis and area residents,” Chehalis Foundation Executive Director Jenny Collins told The Chronicle in May when the fences around the park were finally torn down.
The event also aims to celebrate the Chehalis Sports Complex, newly redone softball fields at the park that host softball and youth baseball tournaments. Besides bringing children in the community a place to take part in sports, the playground, pool and fields at Recreation Park offer tourist attractions for visiting families.
At 5:45 p.m. the grand opening will begin. At 6:30 p.m., Music in the Park will start with local band “The Six featuring Julie Calkins.” An intermission will take place at 7:15 p.m. to highlight sponsors. Then, headliner Billy Gilman will begin his performance at 7:45 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
