A male pedestrian died Wednesday after being struck by a train in Winlock, Lewis County Fire District 15 Chief Richard Underdahl confirmed Thursday.

The incident occurred near the World’s Largest Egg.

Winlock Fire & Rescue personnel at 4:04 p.m. Wednesday responded to a possible train and pedestrian accident east of the Kerron and Fir street intersection, by the railroad crossing.

According to Underdahl, arriving personnel had to cross over one active train line and then climb over the rail cars stopped on the eastern track to get to the patient.

The individual was located on the ground east of the track.

Rescue personnel attempted to resuscitate the individual, who had sustained “significant traumatic injuries,” the chief said.

The individual was pronounced dead at the scene and the investigation was turned over to law enforcement.

Underdahl said he had no further details about the cause of the incident.

Winlock Police Department Officer Tarryn Carter on Thursday said the incident remained under investigation and the department was coordinating with BNSF Railway and the Lewis County Coroner’s Office.

The Winlock Police Department is acting as the primary investigating agency.

Carter said there was no indication of foul play or any “outside variables.” He added that the department would defer to the coroner’s office for information on the deceased.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident Wednesday and provided assistance, the officer said.
