A quick start from the floor and a stingy defensive effort helped Pe Ell earn its second straight win on Thursday, when the Trojans defeated Wahkiakum at home 50-31.
Pe Ell got out to a double-digit lead quickly thanks to a 20-point opening frame, and it added onto the lead by outscoring Wahkiakum 18-2 in the second quarter. In the first half, the Trojans shot nearly 50% from the floor.
“We came out in the first half with great defensive pressure and made sure to capitalize on their mistakes,” Pe Ell coach Kelsey Lennox said.
The offense wasn’t as consistent in the second half, but the lead was more than enough to hold onto.
Maisy King finished with a 16-point, 15-rebound double-double, and she also added four assists.
“She’s really stepped up the past couple games,” Lennox said. “She’s helping handle the ball and being a threat on the offensive end while also being a menace on defense.”
Despite relentless pressure from the Wahkiakum defense, Karli Phelps added 12 points, three assists, and three steals, and Ruby Magruder added four points and eight rebounds.Peyton Zock added nine points.
Madi Engel finished with three points and seven rebounds, and she also provided a “defensive spark” with four steals and multiple deflections.
Pe Ell (5-7, 3-0 1B CVL) will head to Columbia Adventist on Tuedsay.
