The Pe Ell boys basketball opened the postseason with a loss on Wednesday, as the Trojans were defeated on the road at Ocosta 50-42 in a district quarterfinal.
The Trojans trailed by five after one, but a 16-point second had them on the verge of taking a lead into the break.
Instead, Ocosta drained two threes before halftime to tie it up, and the Wildcats retook the lead in the third and hit a few more big shots to extend the lead in the third.
Wyatt Harris finished with 12 points, including a pair of threes, to lead the Trojans, while Blake Nelson added eight and Calan McCarty scored seven. Liam McGrath and Eli Mason scored six apiece, and Silas Edgar tallied three.
The Trojans (9-12) weren’t eliminated from state tournament contention with the loss, but they have no room left for error now.
They’ll need to win two straight elimination games, starting with a matchup against Taholah on Monday at Raymond High School.
Oakville falls at Willapa Valley
The Oakville boys basketball team also lost its district quarterfinal on Wednesday, as the Acorns were defeated by Willapa Valley 68-31.
Daniel Rodas led the Acorns with 17 points.
Oakville (8-10) is in the same position as Pe Ell, needing two straight wins to punch a ticket to state. The Acorns will look for their first district win against Naselle at Raymond on Monday.
