Portland police on Monday said a 22-year-old man killed his 46-year-old mother and 10-year-old sister before dying by suicide in their Southeast Portland home over the weekend.
Police haven’t publicly identified the man or his family members and said they would do so after autopsies are completed.
Police said earlier that the three appeared to have died from gunshot wounds. Police were called to the home in the 7300 block of Southeast 64th Avenue, in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood, shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday.
On Sunday morning, shocked neighbors hugged each other and brushed away tears as they stood outside and shared information about what happened, as well as reminisced about the family. Several said they socialized with the family, describing the mother as loving and wanting a good life for her children and the 22-year-old as hard-working and kind.
One neighbor described the 10-year-old girl as so bright that they had imagined she could one day become president of the United States.
Neighbors said it was difficult to comprehend what happened Saturday.
The girl attended Southeast Portland’s Woodmere Elementary School, about a mile from her home. Principal Katherine Polizos sent a letter to families, sharing the news with “tremendous sadness.” She said trauma counselors will be available during the school day.
“Staff will be centering care, compassion, and empathy as we move through the coming days and I know that many students will be deeply impacted,” Polizos wrote.
