An Oregon man parked on the U.S. Capitol grounds in an area reserved for congressional staff was found Wednesday with a bow and arrow, guns and knives in his Subaru Outback, according to Capitol Police.
Officers were called to investigate about 9 a.m. and spotted the red Subaru with a large tricycle strapped to its roof in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, police said.
The driver said he had guns in his car and officers could see a bow and arrow, and an empty pistol holder inside, according to police. A D.C. police dog sniffed the presence of guns or ammunition inside the car, police said.
They arrested the driver, Nolan R. Churan, 23, and searched the Subaru, seizing a rifle, a handgun, multiple knives, axes, a rapier sword, bow and arrow and a halberd, police said. A halberd is an ax blade and spear point on a long shaft.
Records show Churan has lived in Myrtle Point in Coos County but also has an address in Costa Mesa, California.
“Our Threat Assessment Section is working to learn more about what Churan was doing on Capitol Grounds,” Capitol Police said in a statement. “Currently, there does not appear to be a nexus to the Congress.”
Churan is accused of carrying a pistol and a rifle without a license, carrying a dangerous weapon (the sword), possessing a high-capacity ammunition feeding device and possessing an unregistered gun and unregistered ammunition.
Churan has no prior criminal record in Oregon. A call to a family member was not immediately returned.
