One person fatally shot in Tenino area Thursday night; initial investigation indicates shooting was in self-defense

One person was shot and killed in an act of apparent self-defense in the Tenino area on Jan. 11, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday morning. 

Deputies and officers with the Tenino Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 17800 block of Old Highway 99 shortly before 8:46 p.m. on Thursday, according to  information posted on the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page Thursday night and a news release the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office posted Friday morning. 

When law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene, “they confirmed there was a shooting, and one person was deceased,” according to the news release. 

Detectives responded to the scene and interviewed the shooter and witnesses, according to the news release. 



“While the investigation is ongoing, initial information, including witness statements, evidence on the scene and video surveillance, it appears the shooting was in self defense,” the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said in the news release, adding that there was no evidence to indicate any of the involved parties or witnesses knew the decedent. 

No identifying information about the decedent was released by law enforcement Friday morning. 

“The Thurston County Coroner’s Office will release any additional details on the deceased,” the sheriff’s office said in the news release. 

“Detectives are continuing their investigation and, once complete, will submit their investigation to the Thurston County Prosecutor’s office for their review,” according to the news release.
