One man is dead and three children were injured after their car rolled down an embankment Sunday morning in Southwest Washington.
Authorities responded to the car accident at North Pacific and Ostrander avenues, about 2 miles north of Kelso, just before 11 a.m. The passengers were trapped and needed to be extricated, according to a news release from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue. The car was found 15 feet down an embankment and 50 feet off the road, authorities said.
One of the children exited the car and climbed the embankment, flagging down a passing driver who called 911. Fire crews used hydraulic extrication tools to cut two people out of the car, according to the release.
Two children, ages 2 and 7, were taken to a hospital in Longview and authorities believed their injuries were minor. Air ambulance services took a 9-year-old to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland for multiple injuries. One of the occupants, an unidentified adult man, died at the scene, authorities said.
Fire officials are not sure what caused the accident. The Washington State Patrol is investigating. No other injuries were reported.
