A 36-year-old man suffered a serious head injury in an alleged assault on Olympia's east side Monday.

Three passersby found an unconscious man in a wooded area near the 3200 block of Martin Way East, Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower said. The man appeared to have suffered a blunt force injury to the back of the head when officers contacted him that afternoon, Lower said.

First responders transported the man to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia but he was later moved to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in "life-threatening condition," Lower said.

The passersby were cooperative with police, Lower said. "They helped to get the person out of the wooded area to the street side and then helped our officers and detective figure out where they had found him," Lower said.

Detectives were still investigating the case as of Wednesday, Lower said. Anybody with information about the incident can contact the Olympia Police Department at 360-753-8300.
