Onalaska’s Barrick puts pen to paper, signs with Idaho State

Onalaska senior track and field star Luke Barrick, two days after winning his second straight state title, had a signing day ceremony on Monday to continue his college career at Idaho State University.

Barrick had a top clearance of 16 feet, 5 inches during Saturday’s pole vault at the Class 2B state track and field championships at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima. It was 10 inches higher than his 2025 state record of 15-07 and he did it on his second of three attempts.

Barrick had three chances at 17-01, but was just off the mark.

“Those were the biggest poles I’ve ever jumped on in my life,” Barrick said. “The smallest pole I jumped on today was the biggest pole at Shelton. I was running fast, the crowd was making me run fast, the wind was making me run fast.

“I should have been a little more prepared and brought a few more poles with me, but I blew through them all.”

When he landed on the pad for the final time, he gave the fans a wave and clapped alongside them.

“Nothing short but legendary,” Barrick said of his prep career. “Over 15 school records, cleared 16 feet 25 times in my career. Being consistent is a lot cooler than breaking a lot of records. That’s what scores points to help out the team.”

His performance played a role in Onalaska leaving Yakima with the third place team trophy. All of its point scorers came from field events.

Outside of the Chehalis Activators, Barrick won the pole vault event for the Loggers every time he stepped on the runway. He repeated as the C2BL and District state champion as well.

Idaho State, a member of the Big Sky Conference, has just one designated pole vaulter on the 2025-26 roster. The Bengals placed sixth at their conference’s outdoor track and field championships and will have one representative at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.
