Regenerative Industrial, operating at the Krume Custom Lumber site, will host a tour at the local facility in Onalaska next week with help from the Lewis County chapter of the Farm Forestry Association and the Economic Alliance of Lewis County.

According to a news release from the local Farm Forestry Association chapter, the event will be held at the facility starting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The event is titled “Turning Waste Wood into Workforce” and, according to the event description, it is meant to give locals a peek at techniques that can turn wood waste and other lumber leftovers into useful products.

“Small woodland owners know all too well the challenge of dealing with low-value or unmerchantable wood — especially from commercial thinnings or post harvest cleanup,” reads the event description.

According to the Lewis County Farm Forestry Association, the site visit will provide a tour of the facilities at the Krume Custom Lumber facility to look at equipment that allows the business to repurpose byproducts from wood production. Part of that includes looking at the pyrolysis machine, which is known for burning wood waste to turn it into what is called biochar. That material can be used as a carbon negative alternative to be used in asphalt, concrete or even in agriculture.

The site visit description also highlights that the company will take the opportunity to show attendees what makes it different from Onalaska Wood Energy, which previously operated at the same site.

The tour will center around discussion over the future of the facility, including the sustainability of the new products and the possibility for expansion of jobs and specialized manufacturing in the area.

“We’ll also cover how this approach supports carbon tracking, sustainability certifications and rural job creation,” reads the event announcement.

The tour announcement adds that, in addition to biochar, the Onalaska facility also produces wood vinegar and wood tar that can each be used in a variety of industries. According to Krume Lumber and Regenerative Industrial, the wood vinegar and wood tar have industrial and agricultural uses.

The tour of the site under its new management is open to the public. The owner asks that attendees wear closed toed shoes to tour the active facility. Those planning on attending can also RSVP online at https://luma.com/o0a9k6dg.
