The sound of bagpipes will be coming to Centralia on Saturday for the Historic Borst Home Museum’s open house. The Olympia Highlanders Bagpipes & Drum Corps perform music from as early as the 1790s to modern times.

Starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, the Olympia Highlanders will perform a half hour concert featuring songs from the past four centuries, complete with song introductions and historical explanations, according to a news release. The open house will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“Why bagpipes? Dr. Turner Richardson Roundtree received his education from University of  Glasgow, Scotland, where his family originated from. He had the first pharmacy in Centralia,” wrote Bev York, living history coordinator for the museum, in the release. “The Native Americans appreciated his botanical training, as it matched their medicinal practices. University of Glasgow still has a strong botanical medical course.”

York also invited those interested in learning to play the bagpipes to attend, as the Olympia Highlanders offer lessons. For more information on lessons, call York at 360-264-2923 or contact the museum on its Facebook page at https://tinyurl.com/yujz5d57.

The Historic Borst Home Museum is located at the south end of Fort Borst Park on Pioneer Road.
