Official confirms Washington State Penitentiary inmate death

An inmate at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla died Sunday, Jan. 7, a state Department of Corrections spokesperson has confirmed.

Jarrod J. Torres, 46, was found unresponsive in his cell about 11:15 a.m., Washington State Penitentiary spokesperson Tobby Hatley said.

“A medical team was called to administer aid, but paramedics were unable to revive Mr. Torres,” Hatley said. “He was pronounced deceased just after 11:30 a.m.”

He said results from an autopsy are not yet available.

Hatley said Torres was serving a 29-month sentence for possession of a stolen vehicle and second-degree burglary.

According to an online Washington court database, he also

had a criminal record in Yakima County.

While the cause of death has not been announced, Hatley said Torres did not die by suicide.
