Two lanes of northbound Interstate 5 reopened Saturday afternoon after a landslide caused an hourslong closure of the freeway near Woodland, Washington.
The slide occured around 3:30 a.m. The Washington State Department of Transportation said traffic had backed up more than four miles before the lanes reopened around 2 p.m.
Geotechnical crews were dispatched to ensure the roadway was safe for travel before it reopened.
Two passing cars were damaged in the initial landslide, according to the Washington State Patrol. Neither driver was injured.
The atomospheric river that dumped record-breaking rain across the Northwest over several days and caused disruptive slides around the region.
The Historic Columbia River Highway in the Columbia River Gorge remained closed between Larch Mountain Road and Vista House after an “active” landslide began Wednesday, according to Oregon’s transportation department.
Another slide closed Northwest Germantown Road between Skyline Boulevard and Old Germantown Road for several hours Friday.
