The Oregon Health Authority warned Thursday night of another possible measles exposure at Randall Children’s Hospital in North Portland.
According to a new release from OHA, people may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus if they were in the hospital’s emergency department waiting room at 2801 N. Gantenbein Ave.:
Between 5:07 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., Monday
Between 6:57 p.m. and 8:57 p.m., Monday
Between 10:29 a.m. and 12:34 p.m., Wednesday
Between 1:32 p.m. and 3:32 p.m., Wednesday
If you were there during one of those times, OHA said, you should check for vaccination records and watch for any symptoms of measles.
Measles is a highly contagious, potentially serious illness caused by a virus. It’s spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People with measles can be contagious before they show symptoms, officials said, and the disease can linger in the air after an infected person has left.
Symptoms usually appear seven to 21 days after exposure and often begin with a fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes before a rash starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
Experts say two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing the disease.
The virus is particularly dangerous for children younger than 5, people who are pregnant and people with weakened immune systems. Complications can include ear infections, lung infections and diarrhea. It can also cause brain swelling and be fatal.
If you suspect someone in your home may have measles, OHA says, don’t show up unannounced at a medical facility if the patient has a measles-like rash or if they’ve been exposed to measles within the past 21 days and show other measles symptoms. Instead, officials say, you should call ahead and let the facility know you’re coming.
The greater Portland area has seen a spate of measles cases this year. Just last week, Clark County reported six new measles cases, and in recent weeks health officials have warned of possible exposures in Gresham, Beaverton, Northeast Portland and Southwest Portland.
