Josh Fay referred to diagnosing the Tigers slow starts like a doctor. He ruled out the week of practice, which the 20-year leader felt went great. The mental preparation on the bus ride into Menlo he felt went well.
So what’s the prescription to fix it?
“We’re narrowing things down and getting closer to an answer, but we are running out of time,” Fay stated.
While the next two weeks looms large in the C2BL West, Napavine made sure its in the mix as well with a 48-12 triumph over the Titans on Friday night. The Tigers now get undefeated Forks at their place next week with first place up for grabs.
Safe to say, all eyes will descend into Lewis County.
“This is huge. There is a ton riding on this,” Fay said. “I’m glad we got them at home.”
Thirty-four points over the second and third quarters allowed Napavine (4-2, 2-0 C2BL West) to pull away. Quarterback Beckett Landram had four TDs in that stretch and Brody Mitchell recorded the other. Mitchell also opened the scoring with a 62-yard dash in the first quarter.
He only had four carries on Friday, but finished with 110 yards. Landram’s three passing touchdowns went to Carter Edmonds twice and Tommy Deebach. Plus, Dean Hamilton and Pono Moniz-Taitague had at least 45 yards on the day.
“Liked our approach out of the half, wish we could get that approach out of the gate,” Fay said. “Certainly did some good things.”
For PWV (1-5, 0-2), head coach John Peterson brought out an offense he said he hasn’t run since the 1980s. His star Lucas Lusk had 110 rushing yards and a score plus registered eight tackles.
Brody Magruder led the Titans with 10 tackles and completed four passes for 49 yards. They get Ilwaco next week at home for Willapa Valley’s homecoming.
“We're hopeful we can hang and stand in there with them,” Peterson said. “We went through a three-game gauntlet, and not many teams have to do that. I'm really proud of my kids for standing in there the way they have.”
