Napavine High School student Natalie Fenwick recently traveled to Olympia for a week to serve as a legislative page in the Washington state House of Representatives.
She was sponsored by state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Chehalis.
During her time at the Capitol, Fenwick assisted lawmakers and staff by delivering messages and documents across the legislative campus and supporting daily operations on the House floor. She also attended page school each day, where she received a firsthand look at the legislative process and learned more about how state government works.
"It was a pleasure to sponsor Natalie and welcome her to the House Page Program," said Abbarno, House Republican Caucus chair. "She represented Napavine well and brought a great attitude to the job. Napavine students are known for stepping up, and Natalie did exactly that during her week at the Capitol."
Fenwick is 16 years old, lives in Napavine and is a sophomore at Napavine High School. She enjoys volunteering and is also learning how to play the harmonica, a news release stated. Napavine High School offers students a variety of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, helping them explore their interests and build new skills.
"The page program gives students a behind-the-scenes look at state government and helps bring civic education to life," Abbarno said. "It is always encouraging to see young people take an interest in public service and learn more about how decisions are made in Olympia."
Students from across Washington can apply to serve as pages each year. During their week in Olympia, pages attend page school and help lawmakers on the House floor. Those who participate earn $65 per day and can receive up to 20 hours of community service, the release stated. Students must be 14 to 16 years old, have written permission from a parent or guardian, and be sponsored by a state representative.
