The Rainier boys basketball team wasn’t on their A-game offensively on Friday, but their defense led the way in a 54-32 win over North Beach.

The Hyaks took a 12-11 after one, but were held to just five points in the second quarter.

The Mountaineers (8-3, 3-1 C2BL) defense continued to play well in the second half, allowing just 15 points, but the offense also found its footing.

Rainier scored 35 points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth. Johnny Boesch led the way with 16, while Hunter Howell scored nine and Jared Sprouffske added eight. The Meldrum triplets combined for 19.

“We recognize that our defensive energy can't have an off night and our intensity cannot be connected to our ability to make shots,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We are proud of the way we were able to grind out the win despite facing a little bit of adversity.”

The Mountaineers return to C2BL action on Thursday in Kalama.
