The Rainier girls basketball team earned its third win over a top-3 team from last year’s 1B state tournament Saturday, beating Mount Vernon Christian 62-53 on the road.

Earlier this season, the Mountaineers (15-1, 7-1 C2BL) beat defending 1B runner-up Mossyrock and defending 1B champions Neah Bay back to back.

Saturday, Rainier got out to a hot start, dropping 21 points in the first quarter, but slowed down in the second and allowed Mount Vernon to come back and tie the game at 31-31 at the break.

Come the third quarter, things swung back in the guests’ favor, with an 18-9 run ultimately proving to be the night’s difference.

Rainier’s backcourt trio starred once again, with Angelica Askey, Bryn Beckman and Brooklynn Swenson combining to score all but two of the Mountaineers’ points. Askey led the way with 25 points. Beckman had 20 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Swenson posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 steals, while also logging five boards and four assists.

Haleigh Hanson scored the remaining two points, and brought down a team-high nine rebounds.

Rainier returns to C2BL action Tuesday against Onalaska.
