The Rainier boys basketball team raced ahead early and never looked back Tuesday at Onalaska, coming away with a 64-36 win in Central 2B League play.

“Our defense got us going early, leading to some easy transition baskets,” Rainier coach Bean Sheaffer said.

James Meldrum and Peyton Sheaffer both had 12 points to lead the Mountaineers (5-1, 2-0 C2BL), while Josh Meldrum and Johnny Boesch both added 11 to make it four in double figures.

“We really shared the ball well tonight,” Ben Sheaffer said. “When guys were open, we found them either on cuts to the basket or for catch-and-shoot jump shots.”

Rainier raced out to 22-8 lead, and made it 38-14 come halftime.

“Our defense and turnovers were killers for us tonight, and usually those two things lead to one another,” Onalaska coach Brent Wood said.

Justin Jacoby scored 23 points for the Loggers (0-3, 0-2 C2BL) who are still looking for their first win.

Onalaska will head west for a non-league showdown at Hoquiam on Thursday, and Rainier will face Adna.
