The Rainier boys basketball team earned its first win over Adna since 2008 on Thursday, beating the Pirates 65-45 in a Central 2B League showdown.

The Mountaineers had lost 14 straight games to the Pirates going into Thursday, and had gone 0-10 against them since they joined the Central 2B League in 2017.

“We are super excited with the way we defended tonight,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We were so connected and executed the game plan to perfection. We really respect Adna and the way they do things, which makes this win so satisfying.”

Johnny Boesch led all scorers with 17 points, but the rest of the Mountaineers (6-1, 3-0 C2BL) filled in behind him, with Josh Meldrum scoring 14 points, Hunter Howell adding nine, and Jared Sprouffske pitching in eight.

Lake Johnson scored 16 points for the Pirates (5-1, 2-1 C2BL), who had a five-game winning streak to open the season snapped.

Rainier held Adna to just nine points in the first two quarters, but couldn’t take full advantage of it on the other end of the floor. That changed in the third, when they poured in 22 points, getting the lead out to double digits.

“We are embracing our identity of being gritty, defending, and playing together on the offensive end,” Sheaffer said.

Rainier will get another league matchup Tuesday, when it hosts Wahkiakum. Adna will play again Tuesday as well, with a non-league game against 1A La Center.
