Emergency responders on Sunday rescued a Mount Hood climber who was trapped underneath a boulder in difficult terrain, according to the Hoodland Fire District.
Officials say they rushed to the scene around 10:18 a.m. Sunday on a report of an injured male climber near Timberline Lodge. They found him trapped beneath the boulder on steep ground east of Silcox Hut, the fire district said.
Because of the snowy mountain terrain, crews from several agencies and Life Flight Network helicopters with a surgical team came to the scene, too. They extricated the climber around 12:25 p.m. and began moving him down the mountain to a helicopter to be taken to a regional hospital, the fire district said.
A spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the climber’s condition.
“This incident highlights the importance of strong interagency coordination and the specialized rescue capabilities required for emergencies in the Mount Hood recreation area,” the fire district said in a news release.
