Behind a no-hitter from Easton Kolb in the first game and consistent offense in the second contest, the Vikings swept a C2BL doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, beating Rainier 2-0 then Winlock 10-2 at home.
Kolb danced around six walks, but kept the Mountaineers offense at bay with 11 strikeouts and digging out of several jams. The right-hander needed 107 pitches and 60 of them were for strikes in the win.
“He was all over the place for a little bit,” Mossyrock head coach Darren Kolb said. “Didn’t know if his arm was hurting. After that visit (in the fifth inning), he did a lot better.”
The Vikings (4-0) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice then Waylen Huguenin notched a run-scoring single that doubled the cushion. Rainier (1-2) never got a runner past second base and only had two runners reach base twice.
Against Winlock, Mossyrock jumped out early with four total runs in the first three innings and added three more in the fourth plus three additional runs in the sixth. The Vikings worked around five errors to stay perfect on the season.
They had three pitchers combine for a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts. Camden Case, Kevin Mitchell and Huguenin didn’t allow an earned run. Mossyrock took advantage of six wild pitches, three hit by pitches and nearly two-dozen passed balls to notch 19 stolen bases.
“The baseball smarts are getting there,” Coach Kolb said.
Winlock (0-5) scored once in the fourth and once in the sixth. The Cardinals will take on county rival Toledo on Monday while Mossyrock has until Friday to get ready for Toutle Lake.
