The Mossyrock softball team used a big inning early and a rally late to hold off Ocosta in an 11-8 win on Wednesday.
The Vikings fell behind 4-1 in the third, but used a six-run inning to take a 7-4 lead. Both teams added one in the fourth, and Ocosta scored three in the sixth to tie the game at eight.
A two-run single from Erin Couryner in the bottom of the sixth gave Mossyrock the lead back, and Hailey Allen added an insurance run with an RBI single of her own later in the inning.
“They’re battlers,” Mossyrock Keith Coleman said. “They’ve always been. I’m just proud of them, because they stepped up. It was fun to watch them get that excitement and confidence.”
In the seventh, Cournyer set the Wildcats down 1-2-3 to seal the win.
Couryner pitched all seven innings on the mound, walking out four and striking out nine while allowing eight runs (four earned). She also went 1 for 2 at the plate with three RBIs. Brooke Schwartz went 2 for 2 at the dish and drew two walks, and Maci Rashoff drove in three.
The Vikings (1-0) will be back at home on Friday to host Onalaska in a non-league game.
