Mossyrock falls to Wellpinit in Regional

A short lapse was all it took for the Mossyrock boys basketball team to fall in its Regional against Wellpinit, as the Vikings fell 58-47 on Saturday in Cheney.

We knew this game was going to be a battle and it proved to be true,” Mossyrock assistant coach Kelly Ross said. “We let up for just a bit in the second quarter and let them get comfortable, and it became too much to overcome in the end.

The Vikings (16-7) battled against the No. 2 seed, but in the second quarter, they were outscored 24-15 and they went into the locker room down 11 at the break.

Mossyrock continued to try to chip away in the second half, but Wellpinit continued to extend its own possessions with several offensive rebounds, which led to numerous second-chance points.

Overall, the Vikings were outrebounded 41-17, including a 15-5 mark on the offensive boards.

“They were more aggressive rebounding the basketball than we were,” Ross said.

Zack Munoz finished with 16 points while Luke Cooper added 12 and grabbed four steals. Easton Kolb scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and added four steals and two assists. Hunter Isom scored seven points and hauled in seven rebounds.

While the Vikings did lose, as a top-eight seed, they were already through to Spokane. They’ll begin play in the Round of 12 on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. against No. 15 Summit Classical Christian School in Spokane Arena.
