Donna Wilson, a teacher at Mossyrock Elementary, is competing in America's Favorite Teacher and was in second place in her group as of Wednesday afternoon.
She’s in round one, which focuses on voting from the public to advance.
The winner of America’s Favorite Teacher will get a story about them in Reader’s Digest, win $25,000, a trip to Hawaii and a school assembly with Bill Nye “The Science Guy.”
“I spent my entire life hearing that I would make a great teacher, but I had zero interest in it,” Wilson said on the America’s Favorite Teacher website. “It wasn't until I had my bachelor's degree in my hand and I saw firsthand, young children in my family find their "ah-ha" moments, that it clicked for me that I wanted to spend my career in the classroom.”
If she wins, Wilson would use the prize money to permanently adopt her children from foster care.
“We are actually in the process of adopting our daughters from foster care. With that money, we would go on an epic family vacation to celebrate our family's permanency,” Wilson said. “This adoption has been a very long, drawn-out process that has taken several years. When we finally sign the papers, go in front of a judge, and share the same last name, we would love to celebrate hugely while surrounded by our family and friends.”
Voting for the top 20 in group one ends at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26.
