Going into a season of 8-man football, Morton coach Lee Metcalf knew that there would be games where points would come easily. With fewer players and more grass to cover, it’s a given.
Even by his own expectations, Friday night’s game against North Beach was something different.
“If you’re a defensive purist, you would probably be rolling over in your grave right now,” Metcalf said with a laugh. “It was definitely optional tonight.”
The Huskies nearly hit triple-digits against the Hyaks, scoring 94 points in a 94-68 victory.
Logan Mays tied Judah Kelly’s school touchdown record, hitting pay dirt nine times while tallying a whopping 373 rushing yards on just 18 carries. He also caught a 45-yard touchdown pass, giving him 418 total yards on the night.
Liam Pelletier scored three times and ran for 146 yards on 18 rushing attempts, while Peyton Shields needed just five carries to tally 53 yards and score.
In total between the two teams, there were 23 touchdowns and 1,134 total yards of offense.
“That’s 8-man football,” Metcalf said.
Metcalf did note that Mays and Shields, his two starting linebackers, missed much of the first half defensively while dealing with cramps, which led to some big plays from North Beach, but they were able to play much of the second half on both sides of the ball to help the Huskies pull away.
With the win, Morton (5-1) is now a game up on North Beach and has the tiebreaker, which sets the Huskies up in prime position to host a crossover if they take care of business over the final three weeks of the regular season.
Morton will have Week 7 off before heading to Wahkiakum in Week 8. That matchup is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, and then the Huskies will host White Pass for their regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 20.
Trio of other 1B area teams lose in Week 6

Winlock lost at Ocosta 54-28 on Thursday, while on Friday, Oakville lost at home to Chief Leschi 47-0 and White Pass lost at home against Wahkiakum 56-0.
Next Friday, Oct. 16, White Pass will host Ocosta, Oakville will host Naselle, and Winlock will travel to Wahkiakum.
