WINLOCK — The scorching hot Cardinals ran their win streak to 13 games as they took care of business in a 61-45 non-league win over Hoquiam here Monday night.
Bryce Cline did what he usually does, inflict damage on the offensive end, tallying a game-high 21 points and 7 assists, including 12 points in a pivotal fourth quarter to keep the Grizzlies in a double-digit deficit.
“It was never that close but never a blowout,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “We win the ones we should and survive the ones that are doubtful.”
Coleson Richendollar posted a double-double for the Cardinals with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. On a night with a less-than-usual packed crowd, possibly due to it being a makeup game, the Cardinals had to rely on Richendollar and their offensive rebounding to carry them through this one.
The Grizzlies shot poorly, hitting just 11 shots on the night, but Winlock was forced to camp out in zone as Hoquiam attacked the rim and drew two dozen fouls to net 19 free points.
“We were just fouling a ton,” Bamer said. “We had to overcome that.”
Noah Patching contributed nine points and Landon Tiemens eight as Winlock improved to 14-2 overall. The Cardinals are the lone unbeaten team in the Central 2B League with a 6-0 record. They hold a one-game lead over Toutle Lake, who they host on Friday in Toutle.
First they travel to take on a 6-10, 2-4 Toledo squad on Wednesday. The final two regular season matchups are against Napavine (10-5, 2-4) and Adna (9-7, 4-2).
The Cardinals are in control of their own destiny and have the chance to win their first-ever C2BL title in school history. But Bamer isn’t worried about any of that right now. Him and his team have games to win.
“Keep them focused and not worry about where we end up,” Bamer said. “That’s for the coaches to worry about. The name of the game is talent and consistency. They’re going to be ready to go.”
EATONVILLE — The Loggers came close but couldn’t pull it out in a 51-44 non-league loss to a much larger Class 2A Eatonville team on the road Monday.
Junior wing Kayden Allison put up a game-high 20 points for the Loggers, while Ashton Haight hit for 13 points and a team-high 9 boards and Carter Whitehead contributed 8. The trio scored 41 of the team’s 44 points.
But the Loggers couldn’t find offense when it counted against the Crusaders’ 2-3 zone.
Eatonville deployed the 2-3 zone for nearly the entire second half, and Onalaska had opportunities to score against it, but couldn’t capitalize to complete the comeback. The Loggers hit just 2 of 15 3-pointers on the night and shot 33 percent from the field. They did hit 12 of 14 free throws at an 85 percent clip.
Offensive woes have been the catalyst in all five of Onalaska’s losses, as they are 0-5 when scoring less than 50 points.
“Wasn’t what we wanted,” Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson said. “Second game in a row we didn’t play as well as we hoped.”
It’s the second straight loss for the Loggers (11-5, 4-4) who prepare to host Wahkiakum (10-7, 3-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
“We need to be more crisp in our passing and seeing people open in time,” Nelson said.
