Mat Classic Roundup: Here’s who’s in the state semifinals Saturday

Mat Classic XXXV, the state wrestling championships, kicked off Friday morning in the Tacoma Dome. The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday and all wrestlers who survive to Day 2 securing a top-eight finish.

Here’s a list of local wrestlers who went undefeated on Friday and start Saturday with semifinal matchups.

2A Boys

120: Jesus Campos (Centralia) beat Bremerton’s Anthony Murphy with a 15-0 technical fall, then pinned Sedro-Woolley’s Owen Ensley (3:52). He wrestles Orting’s Trevor Anderson — who won both his Friday matches with tech falls — in the semifinals.

138: Khristian Brant (Black Hills) won both of his Friday matches by pin (5:01 and 3:31). He’ll wrestle Orting’s Quentin Harding in the semifinals.

150: Mekhi Richardson (Tumwater) won his first two matches via pin (4:42 and 1:53). He wrestles Orting’s Apollo Cruz in the semifinals.

175: Tucker Land (W.F. West) beat Steilacoom’s Jacob Warner with a 9-0 major decision, then edged East Valley’s Devin Pierce 8-7 in the quarters. He wrestles North Kitsap’s Ben Gomez in the semifinals.

215: Andrew Penland (W.F. West) pinned Renton’s Kalyjiah Young, then topped Othello’s Anthony Solorio in a 13-4 major decision. He wrestles North Kitsap’s Zakaria Hammou in the semifinals.

285: Talan Meredith (W.F. West) pinned Shadle Park’s Sam Picicci (1:44) and Foss’ Trevion Johnson (5:52). He faces Othello’s Mason Perez — who won his two Friday matches with pins in a total of 2:14 — in the semifinals.

1B/2B Boys

126: Peyton Hernandez (Napavine) edged Liberty Bell’s Yolo Paz, 5-4, in the quarters and faces Goldendale’s Brock Armstrong in the semifinals.



165: Bomani Birdwell (Toledo) pinned Davenport’s Brody Schillinger in the quarterfinals and wrestles Kittitas’ Simon Jones in the semis.

175: Jacob Price (Adna) won both of his Friday matches by pin (1:39 and 4:52). He wrestles Chewelah’s Dekota Acosta in the semifinals.

285: Marshall Brockway (Mossyrock) won his first match via pin, then beat Okanogan’s Braydon White, 6-1, in the quarters. He wrestles Forks’ Sloan Tumaua in the semifinals.

1B/2B/1A/2A Girls

100: Jocelyn Navarro (Centralia) won her first match via pin (3:47), and then beat Zillah’s Alejandre Esperanza, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. She’ll face Washington’s Kyler Menza in the semifinals.

100: Luna Martinez-Areval (Centralia) took a first-round bye, then beat Warden’s Alona Castro in the quarterfinals, 4-3. She’ll face Royal’s Sharon Arroyo in the semifinals.

105: Sloan Kruger (Black Hills) won via bye, then picked up a pin (3:05) over Grandview’s Malia Riojas to reach the semifinals. She’ll face Mya Herrera (Cascade) in the semifinals.

110: Ramona Reinitz (Centralia) won by pin (4:55) against Othello’s Grayce Mendez in the quarterfinals. She’ll wrestle in the semifinals against Naches Valley’s Alexis Clements. 

115: Eva Reinitz (Centralia) beat Wapato’s Betzabeth Zaragoza in the quarters, 14-7, and wrestles Orting’s Marjorie McDaniel in the semifinals.

135: Lia Hornby, W.F. West, pinned Brianna Arias (Toppenish), 0:40. She’ll wrestle Arianna Waters (Lake Roosevelt) in the semifinals. 

155: Maya Kunkel (Napavine) beat Toppenish’s Islah Alcala in the quarterfinals. She’ll wrestle Lynden’s Belen Lopez in the semifinals.

190: Ynavi Rodriguez (Tenino) won via pin (1:21) in the quarterfinals and faces Othello’s Elia Velazquez in the semifinals.
