Man injured after two trains strike his car in Chehalis on Sunday night

Two Kalama residents killed in separate vehicle vs. train crash in Cowlitz County on Sunday

A 57-year-old Chehalis man was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital after two trains struck his vehicle at the intersection of Northwest West Street and North National Avenue in Chehalis on Sunday night.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

Information on the man’s condition was not publicly available on Monday. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The Chehalis Police Department responded to the crash at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17.



A northbound freight train initially struck the vehicle, which was then hit by a southbound passenger train a few minutes later, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

No one on either train was injured.

Chehalis police officers remained at the scene for several hours after the collision.

Two Kalama residents were killed in a separate vehicle collision with a train in Cowlitz County at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17. The vehicle was reportedly traveling southbound on Interstate 5 just north of Exit 27 when the vehicle left the roadway to the right, went up an embankment, hit a tree, then struck a rail car containing liquid propane. The vehicle came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway, according to the Washington State Patrol. Both the 33-year-old male driver and the 23-year-old female passenger were declared deceased at the scene. Neither subject was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
