One person was killed after his electric wheelchair became stuck on the railroad tracks and he was hit by a freight train Wednesday in downtown Puyallup.

Puyallup police and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a BNSF train striking multiple people around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday near the 200 block of North Meridian Street.

A 59-year-old man died at the scene, according to a news release from Puyallup police. Two bystanders saw the man stuck on the tracks in the wheelchair and unsuccessfully attempted to remove him before the collision occurred.

Traffic through the downtown area is significantly delayed, and multiple Puyallup railroad crossings remain closed as police continue to investigate the crash.
