The fatal shooting of a drug dealer inside his Southeast Portland tent during a botched fentanyl robbery ended with an 18-year sentence for the man who pulled the trigger.
While the killing of Abed Fattoum, 57, left a jury stumped in January and resulted in a mistrial, 41-year-old Kailen Guffey opted to take a plea deal Monday rather than face another trial.
Guffey entered Alford pleas — meaning he maintains his innocence but is considered guilty by the state — to a single count each of first-degree manslaughter and attempted robbery in the December 2022 killing.
The plea deal is a shorter sentence than the 22 years handed down to Bonscott Skinner, the accomplice who grabbed the backpack full of cash and drugs from Fattoum.
The case hinged on the testimony of Fattoum’s girlfriend, Cheyvonne Price, who first identified Bonscott as the shooter but later pointed the finger at Guffey. She testified both men were armed.
The broad-daylight shooting happened around 10:50 a.m. on Southeast Ninth Avenue between Market and Clay streets on Dec. 21, 2022. Fattoum slashed Guffey with a machete, inflicting a serious wound on the robber’s arm, and catching authorities’ attention when Guffey showed up at an emergency room with what he claimed was a skateboarding injury later that day.
Guffey declined to speak before Multnomah County Circuit Judge Andrew Lavin imposed the sentence.
Fattoum, who was born in Jordan, had faced challenges in his life but was remembered for his kind heart and helpful attitude in a victim impact statement provided to the court by his brother.
“We are haunted by the circumstances of his death,” the statement read.
