An Oak Harbor man died after several law enforcement agencies were involved in a shooting Friday morning in Everett, police said, hours after a multiagency search for the suspect began in Island County.

According to the Skagit-Island Multiple Agency Response Team, the 38-year-old man who was shot Friday morning initially came to law enforcement's attention in the evening of New Year's Day, because of a domestic dispute in Clinton.

The Island County sheriff's office received a call Thursday about an argument between a man and a woman on French Road in Clinton, according to the investigative team. The caller reported they believed the man had a gun.

A news release from the investigators provides an account of the night's events:

When an Island County deputy and Langley police officer responded to the call, a man began shooting at them, according to the release. He then ran away. The officer and deputy were not injured.

While investigating the incident a few hours later, Oak Harbor police received a call reporting a kidnapping. A 64-year-old Oak Harbor man told police that a man entered his residence, pointed a firearm at him and demanded he be driven to Burlington. Police believed the accused kidnapper was the same man who had shot at officers. The Oak Harbor resident reported he drove the man to Burlington and dropped him off.

About six hours after the abduction in Clinton, the Burlington Police Department received an anonymous call that reported the man was in a home on Kendra Lane in Burlington. Officers surveilled the residence and saw a car driving away around 4 a.m. When officers stopped the car, the passenger shot the driver, who got out of the car. The suspected shooter got in the driver's seat and fled as officers pursued. The person who was shot was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound.

The suspect was pursued into Everett, where a shooting involving multiple law enforcement agencies took place around 5 a.m. in the 6100 block of Fleming Street. No officers were injured.

Police did not immediately detail the circumstances of the shooting, nor who shot the man or whether he had any weapons. Everett police did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment on Friday afternoon.
