A man arrested Friday on a bench warrant for allegedly assaulting his father and stepmother during a dispute in January was released from the Lewis County Jail on Monday on unsecured bail.
Aaron Zachary Wayne Workman, 36, of Chehalis, was charged Jan. 27 in Lewis County Superior Court with two counts of second-degree assault, domestic violence, for allegedly strangling his stepmother and punching his father in the face during a dispute at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Borst Avenue on April 4, according to court documents.
Workman’s father reportedly grabbed Workman and put him in a headlock “to try and calm him down” after Workman allegedly attacked his stepmother, according to court documents. Workman allegedly punched his father to escape the headlock.
Workman was initially booked on misdemeanor charges that were filed in Centralia Municipal Court, but the charges were elevated after the victims received medical treatment and the extent of their injuries was discovered, according to court documents.
Workman’s stepmother had injuries related to strangulation and medical personnel reportedly diagnosed Workman’s father with a concussion and an intracerebral hemorrhage that was associated with the assault, according to court documents.
Workman was issued a summons notice on Jan. 27 for a Feb. 7 preliminary hearing, which he was not present for, prompting the court to issue a $10,000 bench warrant.
Workman was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail on that warrant at 6 p.m. on March 21, according to jail records.
Defense attorney Rachael Tiller said Monday that Workman informed her that he never received the summons notice.
Due to his lack of criminal history and the fact that the case was initially handled as a summons matter rather than an arrest, Judge Paul Strophy said Monday he would give Workman “the benefit of the doubt” and allow him to be released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, April 3.
No-contact orders in favor of the victims are in place.
