Man Arrested at Scene of Fire in Salkum Wednesday

A man in Salkum was arrested by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night at the scene of a fire.

Salkum Fire Chief Duran McDaniel told The Chronicle he heard the man was taken into custody on unrelated outstanding warrants. He didn’t know further details on the situation while the fire was being fought back.

“It was fully involved when it got reported,” McDaniel said.

At around 7 p.m. on Wednesday night, neighbors of a property in the 200 block of Fuller Road in Salkum noticed heavy smoke coming from a trailer.

Firefighters from Mossyrock and Salkum fire departments responded jointly to the blaze and, around 8 p.m., were working to keep flames back from a shop next to the trailer with a metal roof. The trailer was a total loss.

“We’re gonna be here awhile,” McDaniel said.

One neighbor who witnessed the fire and subsequent response, Kayla Craig, said she spoke with a woman she believed to be an owner of the property. The woman informed Craig that a family friend, who is homeless, was staying in the trailer.

“At 7:42 (p.m.), one of the sheriff’s (deputies) left the property with a person in custody,” Craig said. “More water was brought to the scene but the fire had considerably died down by then.”

Both McDaniel and another neighbor said this isn’t the first fire on the property within the last year.
