Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes off Oregon coast

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck off the Oregon coast on Tuesday. The quake hit in the early afternoon about 250 miles west of Newport at a depth of about 6 miles. Few people appear to have felt it and no injuries or damage was reported, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Earthquakes off the coast are commonplace, though this one was a larger temblor than most. The Oregonian/OregonLive’s real-time earthquake map shows every quake recorded in the Pacific Northwest over the past 30 days.

Last September, a 5.9 magnitude quake shook the waters about 230 miles west of Bandon. The USGS categorized it as a moderate quake. It was quickly followed by a 3.0 magnitude earthquake nearby in the Pacific Ocean.

The Oregon Department of Emergency Management says there’s about a 37% chance that a mega-earthquake (magnitude 8.5 or higher) along the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Oregon and Washington coasts will happen in the next 50 years.
