Loggers start fast, hold off Vikings

The Onalaska and Mossyrock girls basketball team’s meeting on Wednesday came down to the wire, but it was the Loggers who came away with a 49-46 victory.

The Loggers led by eight after the first quarter, but the Vikings slowly chipped away over the next three quarters to get within one with just over 30 seconds to play.

With five seconds left, Onalaska’s Delaney Marshall sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to three, and Mossyrock couldn’t tie the game as the final buzzer sounded.

The Loggers never got going from deep, shooting just 3 for 21 from beyond the arc, but they were able to get extra opportunities by grabbing 22 offensive rebounds.

“I was proud of our rebounding effort to get extra looks at the basket,” Onalaska coach Alana Olson said.

Renzy Marshall led the way on the board with 17 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds, and she scored eight points. Emalie Jacoby finished with a team-high 18 points, and she grabbed five rebounds and five steals.

Delaney Marshall finished with five points, as did Leah Hamilton, while Randi Haight and Leighton Underhill both scored four. Haight also hauled in seven rebounds.

Maci Rashoff led the Vikings with 16 points, while Kendall Cournyer scored 12. Adyson Barrows tallied nine, Chesney Schultz recorded six, and Taylor Schwartz had three.

Both teams are back in action on Friday, when the girls C2BL league season begins. Onalaska (8-1) begins with a league bye and will head to Forks, while Mossyrock (5-5) will head to Toledo for its league opener.
