Loggers outlast Mountaineers for second straight win

With two minutes remaining in Onalaska, Rainier’s Peyton Sheaffer threw down a dunk to put the Mountaineers up one.

Onalaska coach Fred Sturza called a timeout, hoping to settle his team down before a critical final stretch. He didn’t need to say much.

“The guys were locked in, they weren’t rattled, and were ready to get back on the court,” Sturza said.

The Loggers ended the game by scoring seven of the final eight points, retaking the lead and finishing off a 47-42 win.

“Two weeks ago, we would have let that one slip,” Sturza said. “But tonight they finished. It was nice to get our first home win of the season.”

In addition to being the Loggers’ first home win, it was also the first time this season that Onalaska (5-6, 4-4 C2BL) has won back-to-back games.

Ethan Thayer led the way with 22 points, including 14 in the second half, while Maddox McKinley scored 12 and Logan Sturza added six.

Sheaffer finished with a game-high 25, including 16 after the break, while Jacob Hanson scored six and Ty Beckman added five.

Onalaska will host Morton-White Pass on Friday, while Rainier (6-6, 4-4 C2BL) will return home on Tuesday to host Mossyrock.
