Loggers Fall to Grizzlies’ Press

The Onalaska boys basketball team’s first experience playing against a full-court trapping press turned into a trial by fire against Hoquiam, and the Loggers came out a little singed in an 82-62 loss Monday.

“It’s all good for our kids to go through because that’s how we will improve,” Onalaska coach Brent Wood said.

The Grizzlies used that press to spark their offense in a big way, eclipsing 20 points in each of the first three quarters to power out to a 36-point lead. Even with the Loggers (2-5, 1-3 C2BL) winning the fourth quarter 20-4, the final deficit still ended up being 20 points.

Nick Rushton put in a team-high 15 points for Onalaska, and both Blaze Underhill and Ben Russon added 10. Hoquiam’s Michael Lorton-Watkins and Justice Stankavich had a go at outscoring the hosts by themselves, combining for 52 points.

Onalaska will get right back to action Tuesday, going to South Bend for another non-league matchup. After that, the Loggers will wrap up their week at Mossyrock on Friday.
