A handful of local runners and throwers got the chance to head across the Columbia to go to Eugene, Oregon for the Nike Outdoor National Championships at Hayward Field over the weekend.

Tumwater’s state-champion quartet of Cassidy Hedin, Annabelle Clapp, Reese Heryford, and Ava Jones took on some of the best relay teams in the country, and came away with third place in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:44.15. They also placed fifth in the 4x400 — which they also won at the 2A state championships in May — with a time of 4:01.42.

Fellow Thunderbird John Hoffer placed 17th in the boys Emerging Elite division 2-mile race (9:29.83), and took 20th in the 3,000 meters (8:55.42).

On the field, Black Hills’ Liam Wall, fresh off a second-place finish at State, finished sixth in the boys discus at 164 feet, 11 inches.

Adna’s Lillian Boyd Jr., the only Lewis County athlete at the meet, placed 17th in the girls hammer throw (117 feet, 10 inches).
