Lewis County Sheriff’s Office investigating after woman found dead near Rochester-area roadway early Tuesday morning

An investigation is underway after a woman’s body was found on the side of the road in the Rochester area early Tuesday morning, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office announced. 

“At about 04:40 a.m., aid personnel and deputies were dispatched to an unresponsive female who was discovered by a passing citizen near the roadway” in the 900 block of Garrard Creek Road,” the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. 

“Upon arrival of medical personnel, they determined the female was deceased and turned the scene over to law enforcement,” the sheriff’s office stated. 

A portion of Garrard Creek Road was closed for several hours during the initial investigation Tuesday morning and has since been reopened, according to the sheriff’s office. 

The decedent’s name was not released by law enforcement on Tuesday. 

“An autopsy has been scheduled, and further information regarding the decedent, to include cause and manner of death will be released by the Lewis County Coroner’s Office when appropriate,” the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office stated in the news release, adding, “This case remains active, and due to the nature of the investigation no further information is being released at this time.”
