Lewis County Repair and Sustainability Fair coming to Morton

If a button fell off your shirt, there’s a rip in your favorite jeans or your small appliance stopped working, Lewis County officials are urging residents not to throw the items away.

Instead, they suggest attendance at the upcoming Lewis County Repair and Sustainability Fair, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Centralia College East in Morton.

There, “fixers” will be on hand to help residents repair items as part of an ongoing effort to reduce waste, according to a news release from the Lewis County Department of Public Works.

The Lewis County Solid Waste Utility, the Lewis County WSU Extension Service, the Washington State Department of Ecology and Zero Waste Washington have brought together residents who are handy at a variety of crafts to repair clothing, furniture, electronics, bicycles, jewelry and more.

“We’re excited to bring the Repair and Sustainability Fair to residents living in the east end of Lewis County,” said Melanie Case, recycling program coordinator for the Lewis County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Utility. “Our volunteers will teach people how to repair items and give the items a longer life by maintaining them and keeping items out of the landfill.”

In addition to offering repairs, volunteers will teach classes on home plumbing, electrical repairs and basic home composting.

Attendees can also shred sensitive documents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents are invited to bring up to three grocery bags of materials they would like to have shredded for free, according to the release.

There is a composting workshop taking place after the fair from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
