The Washington state Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission has issued a statement of charges against a Lewis County pharmacy assistant accused of stealing alprazolam from the Tumwater Walmart while she worked there in August 2023.

Alprazolam, the generic version of Xanax, is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance.

Jillian Renee Haines was charged with unprofessional conduct on Oct. 28, 2024, the Washington state Department of Health announced Feb. 6.

Haines is accused of stealing 311 tablets of 1 mg alprazolam on Aug. 7, 2023, according to the statement of charges.

Security camera footage from the pharmacy reportedly shows Haines take a 100-tablet bottle of the 1 mg alprazolam and carry it with her around the pharmacy, going to a corner of the pharmacy and doing something to the bottle before hiding it on her person and returning it. The bottle was later found to have 80 tablets missing from it.

After discovering that 80 tablets were missing from one bottle on Aug. 12, the pharmacy conducted an inventory and found that a total of 311 tablets of 1 mg alprazolam were unaccounted for, according to the statement of charges.

Haines was suspended after the pharmacy discovered the missing inventory and was fired following an internal investigation.

Haines reportedly did not respond to the state pharmacist investigator’s request for information about the allegations, according to the statement of charges. She was issued a letter of cooperation on June 11, 2024, according to the statement of charges.

Haines has an opportunity to defend herself against the allegations before the state Department of Health enacts discipline.
