A 66-year-old Mineral man could face DUI and vehicular assault charges after a crash that injured himself and two others in Pierce County on Saturday, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Bret E. Kiesel is accused of running a stop sign while under the influence and causing the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Eighth Avenue South and state Route 702 at about 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.
Kiesel was traveling north on Eighth Avenue South in a 1996 Ford F-150 when he failed to stop at the intersection and was struck by a 2020 Jeep Compass traveling east on state Route 702, according to the state patrol.
The F-150 came to rest in the westbound lane of state Route 702 and the Compass came to rest in the ditch between Eighth Avenue and state Route 702.
The roadway was blocked for three hours and 37 minutes.
The Compass was driven by Graham J. Simpson, 44, of Yelm. He and his passenger, Christina M. Simpson, 43, also of Yelm, were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Kiesel was transported to Tacoma General Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the state patrol.
Kiesel could face charges of DUI and vehicular assault, according to the state patrol, which reported that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
Both vehicles were totaled.
