Lewis County Judge Says Domestic Violence Suspect Is a ‘Threat to Community Safety,’ Sets $100,000 Bail

A Chehalis man recently released from serving five months in jail for assaulting a woman and breaking into her home was charged Friday for an almost identical allegation.

Adam C. Sullivan, 34, was charged Friday in Lewis County Superior Court with first-degree burglary and assault in violation of a court order, harassment — threat to kill, second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission and third-degree malicious mischief, all with domestic violence enhancements.

Lewis County Deputy Prosecutor Sara Beigh asked for $100,000 bail at Sullivan’s first court appearance Friday, citing his previous criminal history.

“Mr. Sullivan pled guilty back in November to … residential burglary for the same victim,” she said.

Beigh noted he was recently released from a 5-month jail sentence for that case and was prohibited by a court order from contacting the alleged victim.

Superior Court Judge Joely O’Rourke granted the request, saying she is concerned about Sullivan’s “long history” with the victim.

“Given the allegations here, there is a serious threat to community safety,” she said.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report of a burglary at 6:25 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Roe Road in Winlock.

A 45-year-old woman with bruising on her face and a swollen lip reported that Sullivan, her ex-boyfriend, came to her house to retrieve a pair of his shoes.

Sullivan reportedly then forced his way into the house. The woman told deputies she ran to her bedroom and said Sullivan followed her, forced her bedroom door open and damaged a mirror.

The woman grabbed her car keys. She told deputies Sullivan took them from her, then punched her in the face.

The woman ran to her daughter’s bedroom, and Sullivan allegedly forced that door open as well. Sullivan reportedly took the woman’s keys and cell phones and left in her car without her permission.

Deputies found Sullivan walking on the side of the road a short time later and arrested him. He reportedly admitted to taking the car, cell phones and keys. The car and other items were found on the side of the road.

Sullivan was convicted in November 2016 of residential burglary and fourth-degree assault for a very similar incident involving the same victim.

He was sentenced to spend 5 months in jail.

In that incident, deputies responded Aug. 30 to the same address after getting a report of a domestic-violence assault.

In that case the victim reported that Sullivan, who had recently moved out of her house, came to the property demanding fuel for his vehicle.

Sullivan fled, then returned later that day, taking the woman’s car.

He fled before police arrived and was eventually arrested on a warrant in the case.
